It is a good idea to routinely review your credit history to ensure it is in proper order, especially if you are considering a major acquisition. It is possible to have items that should have been deleted still show on your report. Additionally, items can wrongfully be placed on your credit bureau. Mistakes (items placed wrongfully) are not frequent, but, are possible. Unfortunately, the responsibility lies with the individual to clear up any mistakes, and, this can take some time.

Safeguarding your credit history

  1. Obtain a current copy of your credit bureau report
    1. Trans Union 800-680-7289

  2. Review the contents. You should find:
    1. Your identification, such as name, year of birth, current and previous addresses, social security number, current and previous employers, and your spouse's name.
    2. Credit information such as accounts and loans with lenders
    3. Public record information, such as bankruptcies, tax liens, and monetary judgments (such as child support).
    4. Credit inquires
  3. Items that lower your rating score include:
    1. High revolving debt
    2. Tax lien, bankruptcy, late mortgage payment, judgments
    3. Outstanding collection items
    4. Late payments
    5. Too many credit inquires

What to do with problems or questions

  1. There are credit repair agencies that charge you handsomely for helping you fix problems. However, once you understand what is on the report, typically you should be able to fix the problem(s) yourself.

Keep in mind, significant problems will have to be addressed before any financial corporation will consider approval for lending. This process can take thirty days or more.
